Salinas is the county seat and largest municipality in Monterey County, California. Situated ten miles from the Salinas River and eight miles from the Pacific Ocean, Salinas had a population of just under 156,000 as of 2013. Early History of Salinas

Previously inhabited by members of the Esselen and Ohlone Native American Tribes, Salinas was officially incorporated as a U.S. city in 1850. Serving as the birthplace of Nobel Prize Laureate John Steinbeck, Oldtown Salinas is home to Victorian architecture, the National Steinbeck Center, the Steinbeck House and the John Steinbeck Library.

In terms of arts and culture, Salinas boasts the ARIEL Theatrical (part of the Karen Wilson’s Children’s Theater) and The Western Stage, located in Hartnell College. Salinas also offers the First Fridays Art Walk, Fox California Theater, Steinbeck Institute for Arts and Culture, the Salinas Sports Complex and Boronda Adobe. Salinas’ sister cities include Cebu City (Philippines), Ichikikushikino (Japan), Jerécuaro (Mexico) and Guanajuato (Mexico). Amtrak offers the Coast Starlight, a route that serves Salinas by way of Seattle, Washington and Los Angeles, California. Major utility companies in the city of Salinas include Pacific Gas and Electric, Alco Water Service and California Water Service, AT&T and the Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency.
